The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government entity responsible for administering social assistance programs and distributing grants and allowances to eligible individuals in need of financial support within South Africa.
SASSA provides various payment options to beneficiaries, making it convenient for them to access their funds. Here are some of the payment methods available:
- SASSA Card: Beneficiaries receive a SASSA payment card, also known as an “SASSA Debit Card.” This card is linked to the beneficiary’s social grant account and can be used to withdraw funds at ATMs, pay for purchases at selected merchants, and receive cashback at participating retailers.
- Selected Supermarkets: SASSA beneficiaries can receive their payments at selected supermarkets such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave merchants, Checkers, and Shoprite. These supermarkets have designated pay points where beneficiaries can present their SASSA card and receive their grant amount in cash.
- CashSend: SASSA beneficiaries can also utilize the CashSend service to transfer funds to themselves or to someone else. This service allows beneficiaries to send money using their SASSA card to a recipient who can then withdraw the funds at an ATM or selected retailer.
- Bank Account Transfer: Beneficiaries have the option to link their SASSA card to their personal bank account. In this case, the grant amount is directly transferred into their bank account, making it accessible through regular banking channels such as ATM withdrawals or online transactions.
These payment methods aim to ensure that SASSA beneficiaries have convenient and secure access to their grants and allowances, enabling them to meet their basic needs and improve their quality of life.

The special COVID-19 SRD R350 grant has no fixed payment date. SASSA has said that every month your SASSA R350 application will be checked to verify if you still qualify for the grant. You will be paid each month, provided you still qualify for that month.
“There is no need to rush to withdraw cash on the first day. Once the money is in the account it will remain there until needed.” – SASSA said
